Counseling

A collaborative process that facilitates the progress of the person in treatment towards the goals and objectives of the therapeutic process determined by both parties. Counseling includes methods that are sensitive to the individual characteristics of the client and recognize the influence of significant others, as well as the client’s social and cultural context. Counseling competency is built upon an understanding, appreciation, and ability to appropriately use the contributions of various counseling models as they contribute to the modalities of care for individuals, groups, families, couples, and significant others.

1. Individual Counseling

  • Establish a helpful relationship with the person in treatment, characterized by cordiality, respect, clarity and empathy. Therapeutic bond.
  • Facilitate the user’s commitment to the treatment and recovery process.
  • Work with the person in treatment to establish realistic and achievable goals consistent with achieving and maintaining recovery.
  • Promote the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the person in treatment, which contribute to a positive change in behaviors related to substance use.

2. Group counseling

  • Promote the knowledge, skills and attitudes of the person in treatment, which contribute to a positive change in behaviors related to substance use.
  • Carry out the steps necessary to form a group, including, but not limited to: determining group type, purpose, size and leadership; recruit and select members; establish group goals and clarify norms and basic rules of behavior for participation; identify results; and determine criteria and methods for group termination or graduation.
  • Facilitate the entry of new members and the transition ofexisting members.
